I know it's bad form to follow up to yourself, but in this case I think it adds value.
I believe it's important that what you communicate with your expression is not "I'm trying to figure out what you're saying", but the very subtly different "I know what you're saying - I'm trying to figure out how to tell you that you're wrong without completely losing you".
